Young swimmer Julio Calero erases old Cuban swimming record

Havana, May 20 (JIT) - Young Julio Calero swam the 50-meter breaststroke in 28.07 seconds to erase a Cuban swimming record that would be 31 years old. Thus, he became the distinguished figure of the fourth day of the Marcelo Salado Swimming Cup held at the Baragua Swimming Pool Complex.

The previous record (28.73) belonged to Pedro Hernandez since 1991, set in Perth, Australia. Now Calero, 19 years old, has become a figure of projection in Cuban swimming.

Calero is one of the four Cubans who will be at the Budapest World Championships next June, along with Elisbet Gámez, Andrea Becali and Rodolfo Falcón Jr.

Elisbet, Cuba's best swimmer, threw herself on Thursday in her best event, the 200 free, and stopped the clocks in 1:59.32, a good result and with the highest score of all the competitors in the Cup by the thousand-unit table of the International Swimming Federation (Fina) in relation to the world record (849).

Andrea Becali also stood out, winning his fifth gold medal in the 200 backstroke with 2:18.20 minutes.
