Havana, September 12 (JIT) - Cuba's Elizabeth Rodriguez brought a title this Sunday to the good performance of Cuba in the Merengue Archery Cup of Santo Domingo 2022, in the Dominican Republic, where the last tickets for the Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador 2023 were distributed.

The most stable woman in recent years in the Cuban recurve archery team secured the individual title with a 6-2 success in the final over Molly Nugent of the United States.

A reigning national champion, Elizabeth will return home with the added satisfaction of qualifying for San Salvador 2023.

Undoubtedly, she has achieved a competitive mastery that allows her to star in remarkable performances and aspire to important achievements in higher level competitions.

The other medal of Sunday was won by Hugo Franco with silver in the individual recurve archery competition. He fell narrowly (4-6) in the decisive duel against Nicholas D'Amour, from the US Virgin Islands.

D'Amour is ranked 14th in the world and was in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. He also won the silver medal in this season's indoor event. For bronze, Cuba's Adrian Puentes lost 4-6 against Chile's Andres Aguilar.

The other Cuban performance this Sunday at the Parque del Este Shooting Range was starred by Aismary Breijo in the individual event of the compound bow, a weapon with which she is now making her international debut. Despite the effort she made, she lost 138-141 bronze to the host Carlina Guzman and could not reach the podium.

"It has been a very good competition for everyone, the level shown is high and we are very happy," Vladimir Quintas, head coach of the Cuban teams, told JIT.

"Not only the recurve archers, I also have to highlight the compound bow boys, who have adapted to a new implement and are there with results," he added in reference to the performances of Aismary and Rayner Torres.

Cuba arrived in the capital of Quisqueyana with the objective of obtaining eight places for San Salvador 2023, including those of its men's and women's recurve archery teams, and the individual compound teams. The goal was achieved in its entirety.

The group previously won gold medals for both teams in recurve archery, and a silver medal in the mixed event of that modality.
