 Pedro Luis Lazo, recognized among the best Cuban pitchers of all time, will be among the next inductees into the Palmar de Junco Hall of Fame, the only one of its kind in Cuba, located in the iconic National Monument Park in the city of Matanzas.

Havana, December 27 (RHC)-- Pedro Luis Lazo, recognized among the best Cuban pitchers of all time, will be among the next inductees into the Palmar de Junco Hall of Fame, the only one of its kind in Cuba, located in the iconic National Monument Park in the city of Matanzas.

According to a press conference, Lazo, the most winningest pitcher in the history of the National Baseball Series, will enter the Hall of Fame with the total votes (15) of the electoral committee, while Pedro Chavez (14), Osmani Urrutia (14) and Sol Miguel Cuevas, the latter by direct and unanimous election of the Veterans Committee, will also be inducted.

José M. Yong Leal, president of the election committee, explained that out of a total of eight proposals, it was determined by a majority of criteria to vote for four, from which Lazo, Chávez and Urrutia emerged, to the detriment of the outstanding pitcher Rolando Macías.

Alfredo Santana, baseball historian and writer, informed that the seventh exaltation, scheduled for next February, will also homologate the 84 Cuban players already erected in other similar scenarios in the world, which would bring the Palmar de Junco Hall of Fame to 157 immortals.

Many obstacles from the material point of view we had to overcome in the pandemic stage but the installation maintains its purposes and has the push of a significant number of people who advocate to keep alive the rich imprint of the national pastime, said Elena González Méndez, director of the local development project located at the site.

González Méndez said that a group of proposals for activities to celebrate in two years the 150th anniversary of the first official ball game in Cuba, which was staged on December 27, 1974, in the park itself, considered the oldest active ball game in the world, is currently being studied and approved.

Today, as part of the celebration of the 148th anniversary, the directors of Palmar de Junco are planning to socialize with the community on a wide range of topics for joint work, in addition to holding exhibition games in the 11-12 years old and youth categories.
