Denmark wins its third world handball crown (m)
Havana, January 30 (RHC)-- Denmark reached on Sunday its third consecutive crown in a men's handball World Championship, defeating France 34-29 in the final of the Sweden-Poland 2023 event.
Led by an immense Rasmus Schimdt (10 goals in 11 attempts), the champions became the first team to win three gold medals in a row at the world championships. Prior to the trio of titles, the Danes had only two silver and one bronze.
The awakening of the Hungarian Veszprem center back came in the second half and in the opening half star Simon Pytlick, with six of the nine goals scored in the match, led the charge in the winners' attack.
The French were never ahead on the scoreboard, but managed to cut the deficit from four to one at times.
Nedim Remili led the way for the French in the first half with five of his six total goals, assisted by Dika Mem, who scored five goals.
Danish goalkeeper Niklas Landin made 15 saves and received the man of the match award for his stellar performance. The goalkeeper also saved a decisive shot from Ferrán Solé, when the Danes only led by two goals.
For its part, Spain won the bronze medal by beating Sweden 39-36, with nine goals in as many attempts by Adria Figueras. This was the tenth medal for the Iberian team in the last 12 years and the 18th in its history.
