Santiago de Chile, October 22 (RHC).- Despite the conquest of four medals in shooting, cycling, taekwondo and weightlifting, Sunday was not a happy day for Cuban sports in Santiago 2023. The Cuban delegation suffered defeats in two of its emblematic sports, boxing and baseball.

The "Flagship" of Cuban sport lost two more fighters on Sunday, as three-time Pan American champion Lázaro Álvaro Álvarez lost his first title.   Alvarez lost to Canadian Wyat Sanford in a fight where he was superior and deserved the vote of the five officials.

Something similar happened with Cuellar, defeated by a superior opponent, the Mexican Marco Verde, who had already defeated him in the Centrocaribes of San Salvador, where he was crowned champion.

Cuba now has five eliminated boxers, three in men's boxing and two in women's boxing. The other man eliminated was Alejandro Claro, victim of an injustice for which an umpire was removed from the tournament.

In baseball, the Cuba team suffered its first setback, after losing to Venezuela 6-5, in a game in which Yurisbel Gracial took the field as a pinch hitter and put the Cubans on the scoreboard.

The island team must now look for the biggest possible victory on Tuesday against Brazil, in case it is necessary to decide positions by numbers in case of a tie.

Cuba added four medals on Sunday: Leuris Pupo's title in 25m rapid fire pistol shooting, Arlenis Sierra's silver in the time trial in cycling, and the bronzes of Olfides Sáez (89 kg) in weightlifting and Kevin Calderón (80) in taekwondo.
