Cuban Grandmaster Carlos Daniel Albornoz obtains University Gold Degree

Havana, January 17 (RHC)-- Grandmaster Carlos Daniel Albornoz, one of the emblematic figures of Cuban chess at present, received this Wednesday the Gold Degree in Physical Culture from the University of Camagüey (UC) 'Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz'.

In statements to the local press, the athlete expressed his joy for such recognition, while thanking the opportunity of the courses for meeting to achieve this success in his professional life by combining his studies with his participation in international tournaments.

Albornoz stressed to ACN that he aspires to put Cuba at the top, so he is preparing to participate in the National Chess Championship, next month, and the Olympic Games, starting next July.

He also thanked Santiago Lajes Choy, rector of the UC, for the opportunity to study in his homeland, although he has also studied in other universities in the country.

For the pride of the sports movement, the trebejista also received a special recognition among those selected as the best graduates in his category, according to the Facebook page of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation in that demarcation of central-eastern Cuba.

The Plaza de la Revolución Mayor General Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz witnessed a new graduation of the UC, and among the graduates Albornoz stood out as one of the youngest players in the history of Cuba to win the crown in the National Championship.

With just over 2,600 ELO points, he won the title at the end of 2023 in the Carlos Torres in Memoriam International Tournament, held in Mexico (Source: ACN).
