Havana, May 13 (ACN)-- The Ukrainian Ruslan Ponomariov won the Elite group, escorted by the Cubans Carlos Daniel Albornoz and Luis Ernesto Quesada, in the 57th Capablanca in Memoriam international chess tournament.

The former world champion exercised the expected dominance in the highest level section of the tournament by saying goodbye this Sunday with a draw against the Indian Aryan Chopra and completing 6.5 points out of a possible 10.

Four victories, five divisions and a defeat against the Dane Mads Andersen rounded off his first performance in Cuba and left him unreachable for Albornoz's 5.5 units and Quesada's five.

The hosts agreed to a draw among themselves on the final date and celebrated a double ascension to the podium that had not been enjoyed for many years.

Andersen was in fourth place after losing to the Norwegian Evgeny Romanov and setting his accumulated score at 4.5 points.

Fifth with the same total, but with a worse tiebreaker, Chopra and Romanov were sixth with only four scores.

In the open segment, with more than 140 participants, the Frenchman Gabriel Flom was crowned, owner of eight points and a better tiebreaker than the Cubans Ermes Espinosa and Jorge Roberto Elías, silver and bronze medalists with the same total.

The Brazilian Darcy Lima led the over 50 category in the senior continental tournament with seven points out of nine, while the title of those over 65 years old was in the hands of the Colombian Alonso Zapata, also with seven points.
