Reginfo, Espinosa, his 4x100 teammates and Rendón's coach
Havana, June 2 (RHC) - The Salamanca track once again became a talisman of Cuban athletics: Shainer Reginfo and Reinaldo Espinosa went 1-2 in the 100m, improving Silvio Leonard's Cuban record of almost five decades.
Reginfo (22 years old and bronze in the 2021 World Youth Championship) clocked 9.90 sec (+0.0 m/s) in this Saturday's final, to break the 9.98 set by Olympic runner-up Leonard (1977). He had already achieved PB in the semifinals (10.03)
He was accompanied by his 21-year-old countryman Espinosa (9.96), to climb to the second historical place in Cuba in the hectometer, behind Reginfo.
With their excellent results, Miguel Antonio Rendón's students got a direct ticket to the Paris Olympic Games and placed themselves in the “top ten” of the world list for the season. Reginfo is now the leader and Espinosa is seventh.
At the famous Salamanca Meeting, the best high jumper in history, Javier Sotomayor, achieved two of his world primaries (2.43 in 1988) and (2.45 in 1993, still in force).
In the 800m, the young Daily Cooper once again had another good race, but she was not enough to achieve the minimum mark for Paris. Running alone and with a strong headwind, Pedro Tamayo's student clocked 2.00.76, clearly ahead of her rivals.
Others who stood out for the island's athletics in the City of Salamanca Trophy “Memorial Carlos Gil Pérez” were Roxana Gómez, Yoandys Lescay and Lester Lescay, the latter competing independently of the Cuban Athletics Federation.
Roxana, already qualified for Paris, ran the 400m unopposed and obtained an easy victory with 51.49, while Yoandys Lescay was second in the male sex with a good 45.87, escorting the world junior medalist Luis Aviles (MEX 45.74), and ahead of the Olympic medalist Anthony Zambrano (COL 45.88).
In length, Léster Lescay (8.22) won, to surpass fellow Cubans Maykel Vidal (8.05) and Aniel Molina (8.00).
With the places obtained by Reginfo and Espinosa for Paris, there are now 9 Cuban athletics figures classified for the Olympic competition.
