Pan American Women's Volleyball Cup

Havana, August 21 (RHC) - The Cuban national team lost to the United States in its third match in Group B of the 21st Pan American Women's Volleyball Cup 2024, which is being held in the city of Irapuato, Mexico.

The northern team won 3-1 (21-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-10) after losing the only set they have lost in the preliminary phase, in which they have accumulated three consecutive victories.

On Wednesday night, the Cubans will face Argentina, the other team that remains undefeated after sweeping the Puerto Ricans with scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-16.

The Antilleans have a record of one win (over Costa Rica) and two losses, as in the opening match they lost to the Puerto Ricans in a close match that went to a tie-break.

The United States team came back from the initial failure against the Cubans to finish ahead in all the line with an evident superiority in points by attack 53-39, blocking 7-5 and service 11-4, while they committed 20 errors of their own against 25 of their Caribbean rivals.

Cuba's outside hitter, Yalain de la Peña, was the top scorer of the match with 16 points, all from spikes. The other top scorer was Evilania Martinez with nine, followed by middle blocker Laura Suarez and setter Thalia Moreno, both with seven points.

For the winners the most productive was Veronica Perry with 15 points, followed by Serena Gray (13) and Kendall Kipp (11).
