Havana, Aug 23 (JIT) - The Cuban team defeated Chile 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-18) and secured the fourth place in Group B of the 21st Pan American Women's Volleyball Cup 2024, which is being held in the Mexican city of Irapuato.

The Antilleans finished their group with a record of two wins and three losses, and the South Americans with 1-4 finished in fifth place. For both teams, the remaining option is to fight for the seventh through tenth places.

This Friday, Cuba will face Canada, ranked fifth in Group A; and Chile will face Peru, which finished fourth in Group A.

The Caribbean team dominated this Thursday thanks to its strong blocking, which limited the opponent's possibilities. They totaled nine effective blocks, five of them by setter Thalia Moreno and three by corner player Yalain de la Peña.

Cuba was superior in attack 48-27, blocking 9-5 and serving 3-2, with 17 unforced errors to 15 by their rivals.

The most productive in the match were opposite Dezirett Madan and middle blocker Laura Suarez, both with 11 points, followed by teammate De la Peña, who added 10. For Chile, captain Beatriz Novoa had 10 points.

In other results on Thursday, Puerto Rico qualified to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-19) win over Costa Rica, and with a 3-2 record finished in third place in Pool B.

Meanwhile, in Pool A, the Dominican Republic beat Canada 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-17) to add its fourth success against a setback, and awaits the result between Colombia-Mexico to know its final position, although it also secured a place in the quarterfinals.

By losing to the hosts, the second team of Cuba's national pre-selection suffered its second defeat in three outings at the Norceca Men's Final Six Men's Volleyball Tournament 2024, held in Quebec.

The Canadian team won with continuous scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-21 after dominating the entire line with a 46-41 difference in attack, 10-5 in blocking and 5-1 in service.
