China, leader in Paralympic Games

Paris, Sep 8 (PL) The Chinese delegation comfortably dominated the medal tally at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, which will be closed today with the same podium as in Tokyo, with the British and Americans as runners-up.

In the City of Light, the Asian giant's para-athletes won 94 gold medals, two less than three years ago in the Japanese capital, thanks to an outstanding performance in swimming (22 crowns), athletics (21), table tennis (11) and fencing (10).

Among the multi-medalists, the four-time T37 Paralympic swimming champion Wen Xiaoyan, winner of three individual titles and one in the relay, stood out.

China almost doubled the number of gold medals won by the United Kingdom (49), which won 41 in Tokyo 2021, while the United States completed the podium with 36 gold medals, one less than in Japan.

British para-athletes shone in swimming (18) and the stars and stripes in swimming (10) and athletics (10).

Notable performances were those of the Netherlands, fourth in the medal table with 27 gold medals, 10 of them in cycling events, and Brazil, which closed the Top 5 with 25, led by its athletics (10).

At the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, host France was eighth with 19 titles, thus fulfilling the goal of finishing among the top eight countries in the overall table, although its sports authorities came to aspire to a better position after the first days.
