Havana, Oct. 8 (JIT) - The Cuban men's and women's duos debuted victorious in the preliminary group stage of the under-23 phase of the Norceca Beach Volleyball Circuit 2024, in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
The second men's duet of the Island, made up of Damian Gomez and Eblis Veranes, continued undefeated in Dominican sands, since last week in that tourist resort they won the gold medals with five consecutive successes.
In key B, on Monday they beat the hosts George Wilmore-Rolvin Maldonado 2-0 (21-19, 21-14) in 36 minutes, and in 21 minutes they defeated Alexander Southern-Braedon Cooke, from Bermuda, also in straight sets 2-0 (21-8, 21-5).
This Tuesday, the Guantanamo couple will face Julian Bristol-Clerique Ward, from St. Kitts and Nevis, to complete their performance in the segment, and should have no setbacks to advance to the quarterfinals.
Their compatriots Maykelín Drik and Mileidy Paret had a similar performance in the women's B bracket, defeating the Guatemalans Ana Sofía Arévalo-Danna Aguilar 2-0 (21-10, 21-15) in 28 minutes, and then, in 34 minutes, they defeated the locals Zoe Paniagua-Anicaury Báez 2-0 (21-19, 21-11).
They will finish the preliminaries against Nicaragua's Ella Danielle Resau-Norma Brenes in search of a performance that will assure them of reaching the “quarterfinals” stage, scheduled for the afternoon session this Tuesday.
The competition will grant four quotas in each gender for the II Junior Pan American Games of Asuncion 2025, which will take place in the capital of Paraguay in July.
At Los Corales beach, the competition will continue on Wednesday with the semifinal and medal rounds, as well as the matches for the positions from the fifth onwards.
