Havana, Dec 18 (RHC) A series of results combined in the Mexican city of Merida for Cubans to arrive today without a place among the possible winners at the farewell of the Carlos Torre in Memoriam 2024 International Chess Tournament.
Dylan Berdayes, a member of the last Olympic team of the Island, climbed to the top in the seventh round thanks to the victory over the Peruvian Jorge Cori, who shared the lead.
However, hours later, he lost to his compatriot and current champion of the tournament, Carlos Daniel Albornoz, who led the white pieces for 43 moves of a Spanish opening.
That outcome left both with identical scores of 5.5 lines, but Albornoz was fifth in the ranking, one place ahead of Dylan.
In the final stretch of the tournament, Peru-born local José Eduardo Martínez entered as the lone leader, after beating Santiago's Lelys Martínez after 35 sets of a Sicilian defense, which allowed him to round up 6.5 scores.
Cori recovered from the setback with a victory over Juan Carlos Obregón, Cuban representing Mexico, and with six points he moved up to second place unaccompanied.
Colombian Joshua Ruiz imposed his best game against young Cuban Daniel Hidalgo and completed 5.5 units, placing him third in the ranking by tiebreaker.
The final round comes with several interesting duels, among which stands out that of the first table with Jose Eduardo in command of the black pieces against Sion Radamantys Galaviz, the local star, for now, anchored in eighth place with a total of five scratches.
For Cori, the challenge will be to beat Ruiz, Albornoz will try the same against American Kyron Griffith (5.5 points), and Dylan against his compatriot Michel Alejandro Diaz (5) (Taken from JIT).
