Tornes and Samon

Havana, Feb 3 (JIT)- The performances of Granma's left-handed pitcher Yilian Tornés and Guantanamo's outfielder Lisaidy Samón were key in the 5x2 victory of the Veracruz Eagles against Naranjeros in the II Mexican Professional Softball League.

At the Beto Avila Stadium, Tornés took the win by pitching the entire game at an excellent rate of just one hit and a whopping seven strikeouts. But she gave up three walks and allowed two clean runs.

Samon drove in four of the Eagles' five runs.

According to the tournament's website, the Gloriosas, as the Veracruz girls are called, began their attack in the first inning, with two outs, when Samón hit a line drive to left, sending Lisa Hop and Logan Moreland to the plate. This made the game favorable 2x0.

Naranjeros got on the board in the bottom of the first. Naomi Barbosa hit a sacrifice fly to left and despite Samón's great catch, that connection scored Morgan Smith.

The Eagles struck again in the second inning. Alma Fernandez hit a run-producing single to right to drive in Erika Gutierrez (3x1).

But the rivals came closer in the third inning. Uxua Modrego hit an RBI single off Tornés and sent Mariana Rodríguez to the plate for a 2x3 lead.

The winners' last two runs came in the top of the third inning, with one out, when Samón hit her home run over the center field fence and drove in Maxime Van Dalen.

In its second edition, the Mexican Professional League has eight teams, each of which will play 28 games in the qualifying phase. The top four teams will advance to the postseason, where they will play the best-of-five semifinals.

The two finalists will play the Queen's Series, also in five games.

So far, the first perfect game in the history of the young tournament stands out in the recently initiated season.

This phenomenal result was the work of Diablos Rojos de México right-hander, American Megan Faraimo, in her team's 6x0 victory over Águilas de Veracruz at the Estadio Beto Ávila.

In addition, Sultanes made history and broke records after beating Algodoneras Unión Laguna by a final score of 40x2.
