Havana, Feb 18 (PL) Cuban players are making headlines for their competitive tools in the II Mexican Professional Softball League, according to the island's sports press.

Among the island athletes with notable performances is left-handed pitcher Yilian Tornés, who has accumulated a couple of successes with the Diablos Rojos club, leader of the competition with a 14-2 record.

Tornés, an ace in the Cuban national team's rotation, won her most recent game 2-1 against Naranjeros at the Fernando Valenzuela stadium, according to a report in Jit, a Havana sports publication. The game resulted in a great duel between Tornés and Spain's Bea Alonso and the Cuban pitcher came close to a zero-hit, zero-run game, but an infield home run in the seventh inning ruined the feat.

Cuban outfielder Leannelys Zayas also deserved praise after batting 5-5 in a game, which tied a record she shares with three players in the competition.

The Mexican Professional Softball League has eight teams and in its first edition Charros de Jalisco won the crown.
