Havana, Mar 1 (RHC) Lázaro Martínez and Leyanis Pérez were in charge this Friday of placing Cuba in the medal standings of the Madrid 2025 Indoor Athletic Meeting.

Both dominated the triple jump event in their respective sexes and ratified themselves as the Island's best options to win prizes at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Nanjing 2025, scheduled for March 21-23.

The Guantanamero reigned in the Gallur Sports Center of the Spanish capital with relative ease. With a sequence of five valid jumps, the maximum of 17.12 meters was enough to secure the victory and improve his record in the current season.

Intensifying the work on the speed of the impulse race and other corrections in coordination stood out as a task prior to the universal indoor event, and he focuses on it with his coach Yoelbi Quesada.

On this occasion, the podium was completed by the Portuguese Tiago Pereira, owner of a discreet record of 16.35 meters.

Leyanis was much calmer in the women's version, as she did not expect to be pressured. In that circumstance, she dedicated herself to ensure with the least effort -she only jumped three times- the major victory.

The Pinar del Río native stretched to 14.42 meters in her initial execution, continued with a foul and sealed her incursion with a mark of 14.26 meters, which would have also guaranteed her the victory. The closest to the 14-meter barrier was Finland's Senni Salminen (13.99 meters), followed by Slovenia's Neja Filipic, who reached 13.87 meters.

Cuba's Liadagmis Povea was also among the possible participants in the Madrid event, but she preferred to save her strength for the challenge she will take on in the Chinese city in a few days.

The period of confirmation of qualifying marks for the Nanjing call will be open until March 9, so we will have to wait to venture any prediction. (Taken from JIT).
