Havana, Mar 10 (JIT) - Cuba lived today a happy debut in women's world boxing championships, when Melani Girado (57 kg) took credit for no-show of the Tanzanian Halima Vunjabei.

The result was registered on the second day of the event organized in the Serbian city of Nis, where the island is making a historic incursion, almost three years after including its women in the official practice of this sport.

The triad that assumes this commitment is completed by Yoana Rodriguez (81 kg) and Dayira Mesa (75 kg), who will have their first outings on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, as opponents of Uzbekistan's Sokhiba Ruzmetova and Russia's Anastasia Shamonova.

Incidentally, the website of the International Boxing Association (IBA) published that the exponents of that gender are inspired by the successes of their peers, and highlighted statements by Rodriguez, who said she is pleased to contribute to motivate other women.

"The men have put our country very high, representing boxing worldwide. We hope that one day we, the women, can also put the name of Cuba on high," emphasized the girl, who praised the results of the preparation for that fight.

"It has been very good, although we have not had so many international competitions, but we have prepared very well and I am confident that everything will go well. I am very proud to be representing my country," she said.

"They are very motivated, very well prepared, and although the level of the IBA women's world championships is quite high, we expect them to do a good job," commented Alberto Puig de la Barca, also quoted by the organizers.
