New York Soccer Team Set for Historic Match in Cuba

The New York Cosmos will go up against Cuba’s national soccer team in Havana this summer, according to a new report, marking the first time in decades that a professional U.S. team will play on the island.

The game will take place June 2nd during a lull in the Cosmos' schedule. The Cuban national team will use the game to prepare for July’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Baseball remains the island nation’s top sport, but soccer has been growing in popularity. Although the Cosmos is a 2nd-tier team in the States, some of its international players like Raul and Marcos Senna, former soccer stars of Spain’s World Cup team, are recognizable in Cuba.

 

13 teams to take part in weightlifting tournament in Cuba

More than 80 athletes from 13 countries and regions are taking part in the 34th International Weightlifting Tournament Manuel Suarez In Memoriam in the center-southern Cuban province of Cienfuegos, local media reported.

The United States, Argentina, Aruba, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Uruguay along with the hosts Cuba will be competing during the five-day event, which lasts through Saturday.

Cuba is represented by 14 men and eight women, as part of their preparations for the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada next July.

 

Cuba to Take Nine Judokas to Female Pan-American Tournament

Cuba will take 9 judokas to the female continental tournament next April in Edmonton, Canada, qualifying event for the Pan-American Games in Toronto-2015, reported Ronaldo Veitía.

The head coach said the team is headed by Idalis Ortiz (+78 kg), Olympic champion London 2012 and world champion Rio-2013 and Chelyabinsk-2014.

Veitía added to the National Information Agency Ortiz will be accompanied by Onix Cortés (70), bronze world medalist last year, and Yalennis Castillo (78), Olympic silver in Beijing 2008.

The list is completed by Dayaris Mestre (48), Yanet Bermoy (52), Aliuska Ojeda (57), Maylín del Toro and Olga Masferrer (63) and Kaliema Antomarchin (78).

The trainer explained that the main objective of his disciples in Edmonton is getting places for the contest of Toronto, expected in next July, and so he sends two judokas in 63 and 78 kilos.

 

Fencing

After the first FGP foil event in Turin last November, the FIE is continuing the successful Series starting once again with foil competitions in Havana, Cuba.

The Cuban Fencing Federation in cooperation with the FIE is organizing the Women’s and Men’s Individual Foil Fencing Grand Prix. During these days we will witness top level foil fencing with the top ranked fencers around the world. You can follow the Live stream here as well, highlights will be posted on Euronews.

The competitions will take place at the Pabexpo Exhibition Centre Halls located on Calle 17 entre 174 y 190, Siboney, Playa. La Habana (17th Street b/w 174th and 190th, Siboney, Playa, Havana).
