Cuba Undefeated in Dominican Volleyball Cup
Cuba remained unbeaten by winning, on Thursday, the fourth game of the Maximo Gomez Men's Volleyball Cup, held throughout the week and continuing in different cities in the Dominican Republic.
The match was held on Thursday at the Club Calero, in the province of Santo Domingo and was the setting for the opening of the Higher Volleyball League of the Dominican Republic.
The Dominicans won the first set 26-24, but the Cubans managed to prevail in other sets of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-21.
The most outstanding athletes of the day were Dominican Jonathan Mereces Cruz and Cuban Abraham Alfonso and Mario Luis Rivera.
On Friday, opponents were transferred to the Province of San Cristobal to celebrate the fifth game.
The Maximo Gomez Volleyball Cup travels to various places to show the quality of the sport in both countries and promote volleyball among Dominican youth to develop talent.
The event is a tribute to the 120th anniversary of the Manifesto of Montecristi, the political manifesto of Cuban independence fighters in the 1995 war against Spanish rule.
Cuban Pedro Pablo Pichardo 18.06m Leap, The Third Longest in History
Doha, 15 May (Prensa Latina) Cuban Pedro Pablo Pichardo won the triple jump in the Sixth Edition of the Diamond League in Doha on Friday, with 18.06 meters according to the International Association of Athletic Federations.
What was considered by local media the best performance of the night came in the men's triple jump where Cuban Pedro Pablo Pichardo leapt 18.06m, the third longest in history, to beat Christian Taylor, who also set a PB with a leap of 18.04m, the only two jumps above 18m in that event. Only Britain's Jonathan Edwards and the American Kenny Harrison have jumped further.
Baku 2015
The Cuban radio and television institute ICRT will be broadcasting the Baku 2015 European Games next June, media in Azerbaijan reported.
After the signing of a briadcasting deal with their counterparts in Baku, Roberto Gonzalez, Director General of Tele Rebelde sports channel’ at ICRT, said: “I have no doubt that the Cuban public will enjoy following this new important sporting event. Our viewers are passionate about sport, and the Baku 2015 European Games will be a fantastic display of sport and inspiration alongside the Olympic Games in our portfolio of major international competitions.”
Cuba joins the United States and Canada, the Arab world, India, China, Hong Kong and Australia in showing extensive coverage of the European Games.
