Berlin, December 21 (RHC)-- German police have announced that the attacker who crashed a truck into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin is still at large after the "wrong man" was put in custody, Germany's Die Welt reported. 

"As far as I know it is in fact uncertain whether that really was the driver," said Berlin Police President Klaus Kandt.  Berlin police have said the attack was deliberate and wrote on Twitter that authorities remain vigilant after the detained suspect denied involvement. 
Another source warned that the at-large suspect could still pose a danger to society. 

"We have the wrong man," a police chief told the German newspaper Die Welt.  "And therefore a new situation.  The true perpetrator is still armed, at large and can cause fresh damage." 

An attacker crashed a truck into a crowded Christmas market in the German capital on Monday, killing 12 people and injuring dozens of others.  Police announced after the incident that authorities are treating the attack as "presumed terrorism." 

The man arrested, who police now believe was not behind the attack, is an asylum-seeker who authorities believe hails from Pakistan.   

The Christmas market attack recalled a similar attack in Nice, France, in July when a driver plowed a 19-ton truck along a crowded beach-front area, killing 86 people.
