Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

Damascus, March 14 (RHC) -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Wednesday that the United States aims to fragment regional countries through supporting the terror groups, according to state news agency SANA.

Assad made the remarks during his meeting with Faleh Fayad, Iraq's national security advisor, during which both sides discussed political and security issues in light of the situation in the region.

The Syrian head of state said the U.S. plans in the region aim at undermining and weakening the countries in the region through continuing its support to the terror groups.

Such plans need to be faced by unified stances from the countries that seek to preserve their unity, Assad said.

His remarks come just days after the United States threatened to strike Syria, following the advance of the Syrian army in the war against the rebels in Eastern Ghouta.
