Washington, July 23 (RHC)-- U.S. President Donald Trump says immigration officials will begin removing millions of illegal immigrants across the country.  Set to be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, the rule could be challenged or locked in a court.

"The effect of that change will be to enhance national security and public safety — while reducing government costs — by facilitating prompt immigration determinations," DHS -- the Department of Homeland Security -- said in a notice.

The rule would apply to nearly 300,000 of the approximately 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States.  A poll shows Trump's immigration policy is contrary to the beliefs of most Americans.

"ICE has been detaining and deporting U.S. citizens for decades," said Jackie Stevens, a political science professor at Northwestern University.  "Expedited removal orders are going to make this much worse."

The Republican president has vowed to crack down on immigration but has failed to get his complete agenda through so far.  Despite his relentless focus on a border wall, Donald Trump has so far failed to build one and make Mexico pay for it.
