Vienna, October 15 (RHC)-- The Secretary General of Iran’s Drug Control Headquarters General Eskandar Mo’meni says U.S. sanctions are seriously hindering the global campaign against narcotic drugs.

Mo’meni was speaking after a meeting with officials from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the UNODC in Vienna.   Mo’meni also warned against an alarming increase in the level of illicit industrial drugs production in neighboring Afghanistan.

Iran and the UNODC signed a document to facilitate the establishment of a regional treatment and rehabilitation center in Tehran.

According to official figures, in 2018 Iran confiscated more than 800 tons of illicit drugs. Tehran maintains the global fight against drugs should not be politicized and blames the US for turning a blind eye to the production and export of illegal drugs in Afghanistan.
