Brussels, September 25 (RHC)-- The European Center for Disease Control claims the EU is failing to convince young people of the dangers posed by covid-19. The European Commission warns further national lockdowns will be necessary across the bloc if infection rates are not brought under control.
It's widely accepted that the majority of people in the EU are following the rules as the fight against COVID-19 continues. However, the European Commission claims control measures are either ineffective or are not being enforced.
The commission held a press conference on Thursday in response to the COVID-19 second wave. France has just recorded 16,000 new infections and Spain registered 10,000.
The European Commission is clearly frustrated at the lack of coordination between EU member states. For example, here in Belgium, despite an increase in cases, rules around the use of masks are being eased from the 1st of October, while across the border in France restrictive measures are actually being increased.
The European Center for Disease Control says most new cases, in the 27-nation bloc, are in the 15 to 49 age group. The EU health agency is calling on member states to redouble their efforts to inform this cohort.
The European Commission warns further national lockdowns are inevitable unless we can once again flatten the curve.
