Brasilia, January 30 (RHC)-- Brazil surpassed 9,000,000 contagions with the addition of 61,811 new cases in the last 24 hours, according to data released by the government.  Data from the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) indicate that 1,386 deaths were reported in the last day, bringing the total number of accumulated deaths to 221,547.

With 9,058,687 confirmed cases, Brazil consolidates its position as the third country in the world most affected by the pandemic in terms of infections, only surpassed by the United States and India.  Brazil broke the 9 million infection barrier, just twenty days after surpassing the 8,000,000 cases of Covid-19. This was the most intense growth rate recorded in the country so far.

As for the daily numbers of infections and deaths, they show that the South American giant exceeds for the third day in a row the figure of 1,200 deaths and 61,000 positive cases, as was the case in mid-2020, when the country was considered to have reached the peak.

The figures confirm the recrudescence of the pandemic in Brazil, mainly in the state of Amazonas, whose health system is in collapse and suffers from lack of oxygen due to the high number of admissions for COVID-19.  Scientists attribute the worsening of the health crisis caused by the coronavirus to the emergence of a variant of COVID-19 detected in Amazonas, which is suspected to be more aggressive and which has put the authorities of several countries on alert.

According to the epidemiological balance, Amazonas has so far recorded 185 deaths due to COCID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants, which is the highest incidence of deaths in the whole country.  Despite the recrudescence of the pandemic in the country, President Jair Bolsonaro insisted on his criticism of the confinement and other preventive measures against the coronavirus.

"It is a call I make to the governors.  Just an opinion, but that policy of closing everything and staying at home did not work," said the president during the inauguration of a bridge between the states of Sergipe and Alagoas, in the northeast of the country.
