Moscow, June 2 (RHC-Agencies)-- Russia called an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council Monday to introduce a resolution calling for an immediate halt to violence in Ukraine.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, said Russia would seek Security Council action to end weeks of deadly clashes in Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine between government troops and pro-Russian insurgents.

"Russia plans to submit a draft resolution to the Security council today," Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow with his Mauritanian counterpart.

"It will contain demands to immediately halt violence and begin practical negotiations for the purpose of establishing a stable and reliable ceasefire," Lavrov said. He added that the draft resolution would also contain a requirement to immediately create humanitarian corridors that would help civilians leave hostility zones, should they wish to do so."

Russia has called almost daily for an end to violence in eastern Ukraine.
