Bogota, February 21 (RHC)-- The new political party of the Commons (formerly known as the FARC) has denounced the murder of former FARC-EP combatant and peace signatory José Paiva Virguez.  He was shot several times by gunmen in the village of El Cafre in the municipality of Puerto Concordia, in the department of Meta, central Colombia.

"We received with great sadness the news of the murder of our colleague José.  With his murder, there are now 259 peace signatories assassinated, in a systematic extermination," said Senator Sandra Ramirez, while the party itself lamented the fact that it has to "report this type of news at least once a week."

The events occurred when Virguez was attacked by armed men in the place called el Cafre, in the jurisdiction of Guaviare.  He was transferred to the departmental hospital of San José del Guaviare where he died over the weekend.

So far this year, there have already been 10 murders of former combatants of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army (FARC-EP), while 259 former members of this rebel group have been killed since the signing of the peace agreement.

This fact is added to the public denunciation filed a few weeks ago by the leadership of the Comunes party for threats against the life of Tulio Murillo Ávila, who is in charge of the party in the department of Meta.
