Negotiations break down and strike continues in Colombia; the government is dishonest
Bogota, June 7 (RHC)-- The National Strike Committee confirmed this Sunday the suspension of the negotiations with the Colombian government due to its non-compliance with the pre-agreement, which has as fundamental axes the guarantee of the right to peaceful protest and demilitarization in all regions of the country.
"The National Strike Committee has stated, insistently, that the Government is not interested and has delayed, on purpose, the negotiation of the Pliego de Emergencia (...) After eight days of intense negotiations and having reached a pre-agreement on the minimum guarantees for legitimate social protest, the government said it would submit it to inter-ministerial consultation and return, to the table, to reopen the discussion on the pre-agreed document," explains the Committee.
Through its official communiqué, the Strike Committee asserts that the Executive headed by Iván Duque does not want to assume the social commitments that Colombians need so much, "the Government does not want to negotiate the Emergency Statement (...) we reject the excessive use of public force that has produced to date 77 homicides, 1,246 wounded, 2,808 detainees, 106 women victims of sexual violence and 74 lost eyes", they added.
"With this attitude, the government leads us to suspend the negotiations and evaluate the continuity of the talks advanced with the government. As part of this process, we will deliver to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights the pre-agreement of May 24 on the minimums to guarantee the exercise of peaceful social protest," states the Committee.
