Washington, July 13 (RHC)-- The United States has seen a nearly 50-percent spike in COVID-19 infections this week compared to last week.  The U.S. averaged 19,455 new Covid-19 cases per day over the last seven days, a 47.5-percent increase from the previous week.

The latest figures appeared in a new COVID map released by the Johns Hopkins University.  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, however, maintains that 99 percent of the cases occur in those not vaccinated.

According to official estimates, over half of the United States’ population have been fully vaccinated but there are currently 37.4 new cases per 100,000 people nationwide this week, up from 28.7 cases per 100,000 last week.

“The fact that we are seeing case increases in counties even in higher vaccination states is worrisome," said Dr. Jennifer Nuzzo, with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. "Anywhere there are pockets of low vax coverage is at risk!"

The latest spike in the number of cases hit certain states harder; for instance Missouri saw a 70-percent increase, with 161.7 new cases per 100,000.   It is not yet proven whether the U.S. vaccines create resistance against the Delta variant of the virus, which is rapidly spreading across the world.
