La Paz, August 23 (RHC)--Bolivian President Luis Arce said Monday in an official act at the General Staff of the Army, that justice is the only method for national reconciliation, as well as for the reparation of victims.
"Th correct, real and concrete way of pacification that we have is the application of justice, as requested by the families of the people who have lost lives, because here we are not talking about the fact that the coup d'état simply left economic damage, it left a debt with 38 families in the country and the only way to repair and pacify this is with the application of justice as soon as possible," said President Arce.
The head of state asserted that all victims of dictatorships must know the truth about some events, also alluding to the dictatorship of Jeanine Áñez in 2019 and that of Banzer in 1971. "The Bolivian people can no longer endure any impunity or pacts of silence," he affirmed.
The statement comes after the confirmation of Jeanine Áñez's guilt in the crimes during the coup d'état in Bolivia -- accused of "terrorism, sedition and conspiracy" -- and the demand for her freedom, by national and international organizations after she allegedly attempted suicide in prison over the weekend.
Last week, the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI-Bolivia) presented the final report on the investigation of the acts of violence, as well as the human rights violations that occurred in the country between September 1 and December 31, 2019. The GIEI-Bolivia report is the result of more than 100,000 pages of investigative, judicial and expert files, and more than 360 individual interviews.
The document concluded that in 2019, during the right-wing mandate of Jeanine Áñez, there were rights violations, racism, massacres with lethal weapons used by the security forces and extrajudicial executions, according to official media.
Finally, the Bolivian president reiterated that the Executive will provide all support to the victims. "We want a just society, a country with opportunities for all, depatriarchalized and without discrimination."
