Montevideo, October 5 (RHC)-- The National Coordinator of Settlements led this Monday a demonstration of hundreds of people who gathered in front of the Ministry of Economy of Uruguay demanding budget for the housing policy of the State.

According to the protesters, since the government presided by Luis Lacalle Pou came to power, funding for housing policies have been drastically reduced.  One of the reasons for the demonstration is the housing deficit in Uruguay, which has increased in recent months.

Under the slogan "Government absent, people present," the demonstrators marched from the headquarters of the Ministry of Economy to the Executive Tower, seat of Lacalle Pou's government.

At the end of the march, the participants read a proclamation with the aim of making the Uruguayan government aware first hand of the sector's demands regarding the housing situation.

World Habitat Day or World Homeless People's Day has been commemorated on the first Monday of October every year since it was established in 1985.  This date is used to reflect, advocate and claim on behalf of people's right to decent and sufficient housing.
