European airlines operating highly polluting empty flights to keep airport landing privileges
Brussels, January 10 (RHC)-- Outrage is mounting over news that a number of airlines are operating tens of thousands of near-empty flights in Europe amid the COVID surge in order to retain coveted airport landing slots.
According to observers, pre-assigned takeoff and landing slots are common at Europe's crowded airports, and are used to allocate space and prevent chaos among different airlines.
Climate activists slammed the practice, including Greta Thunberg, who tweeted sarcastically: “The EU surely is in a climate emergency mode.”
