Gun attack in Mexico's Guerrero state leaves seven dead

Mexico City, December 12 (RHC)-- The Public Security Secretariat (SSP) of the Mexican state of Guerrero reported that a group of gunmen killed seven people, including a minor, during the attack over the weekend in the town of El Durazno, in the south of the country.

According to official sources, around 20 vehicles identified with the acronym "FM" burst into the municipality of Coyuca de Catalán, where they gathered several villagers in a school and riddled them with bullets.  "In that place it was reported that seven male bodies were found dead, with multiple injuries from firearm projectiles in different parts of the body," they described in a press release.

Six of the men, according to witnesses, perished in the room, while the other one was killed in the outskirts while trying to escape.  The authorities report that the confrontation lasted several minutes as some residents fought with the intruders to stop the killing.

The attackers also set fire to a four-wheeler and fired at homes as they retreated from the enclave inhabited by some 1,000 people.  The group of attackers was identified as part of the Familia Michoacana cartel, with criminal activity in several Mexican states and the southern United States.
