Washington prepares possible evacuation of its citizens in Sudan

Havana, April 21 (RHC) - Washington is preparing to send additional troops to its base in Djibouti in case it is necessary to evacuate the Americans from Sudan, according to what was known today in diplomatic sources in Khartoum.

Although the US embassy in Sudan issued a statement on Thursday stating that due to the insecurity situation and the closure of the airport it is currently unsafe to carry out an evacuation of US citizens, the Pentagon said it was deploying additional capabilities nearby the region for contingency purposes.

For political observers, the United States is preparing to send additional troops to its military base in Djibouti in case of an eventual emergency evacuation of American citizens from Sudan.

Djibouti is a small African nation of around a million people that has become essential to US operations in the region.

For his part, White House spokesman John Kirby said the day before that President Joe Biden had already ordered the prior positioning of the military forces and added that he was closely following events.

So far, the latest report from the World Health Organization acknowledges that there are already more than 413 people killed by the fighting in Sudan, while another 3,551 have been injured since the outbreak of the conflict between Sudan’s army country and the so-called Rapid Support Forces, in the early hours of last Saturday.
