Violence against minors and adolescents is today a growing trend in Uruguay
Montevideo, Aug 11 (RHC) Violence against minors and adolescents is today a growing trend in Uruguay, said the president of the National Institute for Children and Adolescents (INAU), Pablo Abdala.
This was a conclusion after the release of a report by the Integral System for the Protection of Children and Adolescents, which published figures on violence during the first half of 2023.
In that period, six thousand 296 cases were attended, of which 947 were new with respect to the record of 2022.
"Society is more violent to children. It is a violence that is made invisible in terms of the fact that it occurs mainly in the private sphere and is difficult to detect," said Abdala.
She explained that women are more exposed and early childhood is the most vulnerable group. Fifty-five percent of the victims were girls and female adolescents, and half of the cases were in children between 0 and 12 years of age.
Emotional abuse was the most reported type of violence, followed by neglect and sexual abuse.
In reference to the link between the parties, in 39 percent of the cases the violence is exercised by the father, 25 percent by the mother and 14 percent by another family member. (Source: PL)
