Lima, August 24 (RHC)-- Defense lawyers of the president-designate of Peru, Dina Boluarte, requested the prosecutor of the nation, Patricia Benavides, to dismiss the complaint for genocide against the head of state, because of the deaths that occurred in the protests of last December and February.

In statements to local media, Boluarte's lawyer, Joseph Campos, said that "what we have seen is that there were violent demonstrations that cannot be classified as protests."   Campos also asked that "an investigation be continued and that the situations in which there was due or improper use of force be established, and based on this, to absolve or hold responsible; but this is not being done in the way it is being investigated."

Likewise, he confirmed that he has asked "the Prosecutor to close this investigation, because there is a deterioration of the democratic authority that is devastating for the State" and that he considers demonstrated that Boluarte did not participate in what he is accused of.

The defense lawyer also argued that the president only received a report at the end of the day of the actions of control of the protests and that she had given instructions for them to adhere to the respect of fundamental rights.

Together with several members of the Executive, Dina Boluarte is being investigated for the death of 49 people in the protests that demanded her resignation and the closing of the Congress, after the constitutional president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, was dismissed.
