Quito, Sep 1 (RHC) Ecuador's presidential candidate for the Citizen Revolution (RC) movement, Luisa González, confirmed Friday that she received an alert on an alledge attempt against her life.

In statements to a local radio station, Luisa Gonzalez denounced that this type of events constitute an affectation to democracy when, instead of winning at the polls, they seek to take the life of a candidate, she said.

"It is very worrying because democracy is affected, there is already a candidate who was murdered. And, in fact, they sent me the alert," he warned.

González revealed that she accepted President Guillermo Lasso's request for the Armed Forces to provide her with security.

However, the candidate to the presidency of the Executive pointed out that the speech should not remain in a vest but in the guarantee that all Ecuadorians should have security.

The day before in the afternoon, reports of a possible attack against the candidate of the CR filled the social networks after the arrest of people with grenades.

The commander of the National Police, General Fausto Salinas, indicated in a press conference that he could not answer if a plan against the candidate was being prepared, although he confirmed the detention of subjects with explosive material.

This investigation is in the hands of the Prosecutor's Office, institution that can ratify or deny the motivation of the suspects, said Salinas.

Earlier, former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017) denounced on his X platform account, formerly Twitter, that a person was arrested with weapons and declared that they were for an attack against Gonzalez. We need to verify this, can anyone do it? To hell with the Prosecutor's Office and its "reserve" in the previous investigation. Ecuador needs to know! Hopefully it is false news, wrote the former president with evident concern.

According to specialists, Ecuador is suffering an escalation of insecurity, with frequent criminal acts that in 2022 claimed the lives of more than 4,500 people and the number of violent deaths is expected to increase in 2023.Fernando Villavicencio, who was also a presidential candidate, was murdered on August 9, an event that shocked the country and shook the board prior to the first round of voting.Last week, Lasso ordered the Armed Forces to protect those who seek to relieve him in the Carondelet Palace. After the attack against Villavicencio, the ruler has been questioned for not guaranteeing enough security to the aspirants to the presidency.

Villavicencio's family announced that they would file a complaint against the president for fraudulent omission, for not fulfilling his role as guarantor of security.

In the midst of this violent scenario, this South American nation is less than 45 days away from the electoral appointment, in which Ecuadorians will elect the next president in a runoff election between Luisa González and Daniel Noboa, of the National Democratic Action alliance. (Source:PL)
