Santiago de Chile, September 10 (RHC)-- The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), arrived Saturday night in Santiago de Chile to participate in the commemoration ceremony for the 50th anniversary of the coup d'état against President Salvador Allende.

The Mexican Air Force plane that transported President López Obrador landed at Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in the Chilean capital, shortly after 23:00 local time (02:00 GMT on Sunday).

The Mexican leader, who arrived from Colombia, where he made an official visit, was received on the runway by the Chilean Foreign Minister, Alberto Klaveren, and by the Mexican ambassador in Santiago, Laura Moreno.

The Public Broadcasting System (SRP) of the Mexican State reported on social networks that, in a brief interview, the Chilean foreign minister was pleased with AMLO's presence in his country.  "We have a great appreciation for all that Mexico meant to Chile.  We know that President López Obrador travels abroad on very few occasions and we feel very honored by this visit," he said.

The Mexican president begins his agenda this Sunday morning with a private meeting with the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa.   Around midday, López Obrador will be received by his Chilean counterpart Gabriel Boric at La Moneda Palace, the seat of the Executive Power.

Afterwards, he will travel with his wife, Beatriz Gutiérrez, to the Mexican ambassador's residence to lead a commemorative ceremony for the 50th anniversary of Chilean exiles in Mexico.

According to the agenda, the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest distinction awarded to foreigners, will be presented posthumously to President Salvador Allende, who was overthrown by a military coup in 1973.  Senator María Isabel Allende Bussi, Allende's daughter, will receive the decoration.

On Monday, September 11, López Obrador will attend the ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the coup d'état in Chile, after which he will return to Mexico.
