Mexico City, October 8 (RHC)-- Members of the Julian Assange Life and Liberty Coalition demonstrated outside the building where the offices of the British Embassy are located, demanding freedom for Julian Assange and that he not be extradited to the United States.

Edith Cabrera, commented that October 4 "was the 19th anniversary of the formation of WikiLeaks and we are remembering its leaks.  The vast majority are human rights violations, and this is why he is imprisoned in the United Kingdom.  We are talking about the fact that he uncovered war crimes, torture, mass surveillance, global conspiracies, and it is because of these same leaks that cases in favor of human rights have been won in the courts".

The protesters said that the Australian activist has been in prison for almost 5 years, "and without any charges, and a possible extradition to the United States is expected. This month the UK courts returned from vacation, and it is expected that they will give an answer if they allow Julian his last chance to appeal or not."

Cabrera said that "we are dismayed and upset by all the human rights violations he has been subjected to. He is a journalist who fulfilled his duty as such, and should not be treated in this way. We are defending his name, we want his name vindicated, but we are also defending his life and our right to be well informed."

They assured that, "this is an attack against investigative journalists and against any citizen who pretends to go against hegemonic thinking and who speaks truths about certain governments."

Regarding Assange's state of health they commented that the last report they have is from late 2019 and early 2020, when he was visited by a psychiatrist, "and his diagnosis was terrible, because he presented a very strong picture of depression and suicidal tendency. He presented symptoms of a person exposed to psychological torture, for all the years he was a refugee in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, and then he was transferred to a small cell in Belmarsh prison.  There he remains 22 hours a day as if he were a terrorist criminal, and he has not committed any crime."

They stressed that it is already more than 13 years of "persecution, because since before being in the Ecuadorian embassy for seven years, he was just over a year under house arrest, and since 2019 he was taken to the current prison."
