Beirut, June 11 (RHC)-- Sami Abu Zuhri, with the resistance movement Hamas, said on Tuesday they were ready to cooperate with mediators in ceasefire negotiations to implement the terms of a resolution. He said it was up to Washington to ensure that Israel abides by the deal.
“The U.S. administration is facing a real test to carry out its commitments in compelling the occupation to immediately end the war in an implementation of the UN Security Council resolution,” Abu Zuhri was quoted as saying.
On Monday, Hamas said it welcomes a Security Council vote to adopt a resolution backing a ceasefire. But Hamas says its demands must be met, including a permanent ceasefire and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces. The Islamic Jihad also agrees with what the resolution calls for.
The Palestinian Authority has also welcomed the approval of the Gaza ceasefire resolution. However, the Palestinian Authority’s ambassador to the UN said the responsibility for implementing the resolution is Israel’s. Riyad Mansour said Israeli forces will not be allowed to take control of even one ounce of Gaza.
Fourteen members of the Security Council voted in favor of a US-drafted proposal on Gaza ceasefire on Monday. Russia abstained.
The three-phase plan envisages the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the exchange of prisoners and the reconstruction of the territory.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed his commitment to a ceasefire... but Netanyahu has yet to prononce his approval or disapproval.
Israel has failed to abide by previous UN ceasefire resolutions, including most recently in March. It has also not complied with the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to cease its genocidal actions in Gaza and “immediately halt” its operations in the southernmost city of Rafah.
