Brasilia, June 12 (RHC)-- The Brazilian Government, headed by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, will request the extradition of 65 Brazilians who escaped to neighboring Argentina after participating in the coup attempt on January 8, 2023.

According to Brazilian media, investigations affirm that the escapes occurred in 2024 inside vehicle trunks, walking across the bridge on the border or crossing the Paraná River.  “Some of these fugitives, around 65 of them, were located by the Argentinean authorities.  None of them went through immigration controls."

The names of these Brazilians accused by their country's justice system emerged within the framework of the operation known as Lesa Patria carried out by the Brazilian authorities.  The fugitives have requested refuge in Argentina, according to information from press reports.

When reporting the arrests, the police stated that the accused "have deliberately failed to comply with court orders or have fled to other countries to evade the application" of Brazilian criminal legislation.

Likewise, agents are still on the street to arrest "another 159 convicted or investigated" for the episode known as the assault on Brasilia, in which thousands of far-right activists tried to force a military intervention to return the far-right Jair to power. Bolsonaro.

The coup attempt occurred on January 8, 2023, a week after Lula's inauguration, when hundreds of followers of former President Bolsonaro stormed the headquarters of the three branches of government in Brasilia to demand that their leader be reinstated in office.

The detainees failed to comply with precautionary measures.  Meanwhile, the fugitives who would have escaped to Argentina are accused of removing the electronic anklet, changing their address without informing the authorities or not attending court summons.
