Lavrov calls in UN to eliminate causes of the conflict in Ukraine

United Nations, Jul 16 (RHC) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called for addressing the causes of the conflict in Ukraine by insisting at the United Nations on the need to ensure the security of the parties.

The end of the confrontation between Moscow and Kiev should be accompanied by the elimination of the threat posed by the West to Russia's security, the Foreign Minister said during an open debate of the Security Council convened by his delegation, which this month chairs that body.

Lavrov insisted that both his country and the West need mutual guarantees and agreements, in a clear allusion to the need to make a pact for the security of both.

At the same time, he considered it necessary to take into account the new geo-strategic realities on the Eurasian continent, where a new truly equal and indivisible continental security architecture is taking shape.

In this context, Europe runs the risk of lagging behind with respect to this objectively historic process, he added.

“We are ready to seek a balance of interests,” he further said.

The global and regional balance of power should be restored as well, along with redressing injustices in the world economy, the top diplomat added.

The Russian Foreign Minister rejected the use of such coercive measures in a multipolar world which, in his opinion, should not have any monopoly in financial or monetary regulation, trade or technologies.

With regard to US policy, the head of Russian diplomacy warned that Washington is convinced that a new global war will not affect the United States, but its European allies.

“If this analysis forms the basis of the strategy of (Joe) Biden's administration, it is a very dangerous mistake, and the Europeans should realize what a suicidal role has been assigned to them,” he added before the members of the highest body for peace on the planet.

At the same time, he demanded more attention for national minorities to address the conflict on Ukrainian territory.

“We urge all those who show sincere interest in overcoming the crisis in Ukraine to consider in any of their proposals the key issue of the rights of national minorities.

All without exception,” the high representative insisted. (Source: Prensa Latina)
