Foreign Minister highlights positive moment in US-Mexico relations

Havana, July 18 (RHC)--The relationship between the United States and Mexico is going through a very positive moment, said Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena when she was received in Washington by the head of U.S. diplomacy, Antony Blinken.

"We have mechanisms for dialogue, we have been able to have very fruitful conversations with results, which is exactly what we are looking for," Bárcena said before beginning talks with Blinken at the State Department.

She told reporters that on migration, it has been possible to reduce the numbers to the point where "orderly and safe migration is more possible than ever.

She also praised actions taken in bilateral cooperation and with governments in the region because "migration is a phenomenon that will probably never stop, but at least we want it to be orderly, safe, and protected.

Noting the progress made in the fight against fentanyl trafficking, Bárcena added: "We believe that the North American region is the most dynamic region in the world today, and we have a trade relationship of more than $800 billion between Mexico and the United States.

She also referred to the importance of the victory of Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico, "the first woman to become president in 200 years, which is very good news", and she is "totally committed to prosperity, to the environment, to renewable energies".

For his part, Blinken agreed with the good moment of the bilateral relations and affirmed that "when we have difficult problems, we work together on them. Regular migration is obviously one of the most important examples.

"Thanks to the strong measures that Mexico has taken, the strong leadership of both President (Joe) Biden and President (Andres Manuel) Lopez Obrador, we have just seen a dramatic reduction in the number of irregular migrants trying to cross the border," the Secretary of State stressed. "But as we discussed with our partners in the Alliance for Economic Prosperity in the Americas (APEP), there is much more we can do and are doing among our countries and in our hemisphere for the 21st century economy," he stressed.

In addition to attending the APEP Ministerial Plenary, her agenda included a meeting at the White House with the President's Advisor on Global Infrastructure and Energy Security, Amos Hochstein, and another with Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, among others. (Source: Prensa Latina)
