Tegucigalpa, August 22 (RHC)-- The National Congress of Honduras passed the Law for the Rational and Efficient Use of Energy (UREE), and legislated the establishment of competences and activities for planning and implementing energy efficiency.
The UREE Act is envisaged as a legal instrument that seeks to promote best energy efficiency practices in all sectors of the country.
According to media reports, the law establishes mechanisms for financing and promotion, as well as provisions related to the management and systematization of information on technical regulations.
The Undersecretary of Energy, Marcos Flores, said that the legislation will have a positive impact on the finances of Honduran households. “With a lower energy consumption, there will be a lower consumption of fossil fuels in the country,” said the undersecretary.
In this respect, the balance of payments and greenhouse gas emission reduction are expected to improve, Therefore, a fund for the rational use of energy is planned to be directed at entrepreneurs wishing to carry out energy efficiency and self-production projects.
Energy expert Kevin Rodriguez clarified that the nation has the highest electrical intensity in Central America, so it is necessary to improve efficiency and this law will help promote already.
It is also necessary to socialize the law, and inform the population and importers of electrical products that, in future, they can only import according to technical standards.
In Central America, the Honduran nation is the nation with the highest energy consumption.
