Bogota, September 25 (RHC)-- The Colombian Attorney General's Office has opened an exhaustive file to investigate the alleged assassination plans directed against President Gustavo Petro, after the alarming allegations made by the head of state himself.

In recent statements, the Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, revealed that the authorities obtained information about at least one plan to attempt against the life of President Petro.  In response, intelligence work has been intensified with the aim of collecting information to prevent any possible attack.

Velásquez also stressed that all possible attacks against Petro are being investigated and that the protection strategy has been reinforced not only for the president, but also for his family, thus guaranteeing their safety in these times of uncertainty.

The situation became critical in mid-September, when President Petro reported that he received a warning from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), through the Colombian ambassador in Washington, Daniel García-Peña.  According to Petro, this alert detailed a possible plot to assassinate him before the end of 2024, using a truck loaded with explosives.  “The version came through the DEA, via the ambassador,” the president clarified, adding that the plan is still ongoing.

“They put the money in to see if Petro disappears before December. With the money they have put in, they have acquired two dump trucks, and the idea is to use one of them, loaded with dynamite and explosives, to blow up the dump truck as my vehicle passes by. "This is the death operation," said President Petro, raising a serious alert about the seriousness of the situation.

The Attorney General's Office continues working to clarify these events and safeguard the integrity of the Colombian president.
