Montevideo, December 26 (RHC)-- Former Uruguayan President Mujica will undergo surgery for his esophageal cancer. The decision was made after a considerable increase in the narrowing of the former president's esophagus was detected.
The current health condition of former Uruguayan President José Pepe Mujica requires a scheduled surgical intervention for this Friday, aimed at improving his well-being through the placement of a stent in the esophagus, medical sources reported this Tuesday.
According to Dr. Raquel Perrone, Mujica's primary care physician, the surgery involves the insertion of an esophageal stent, an option that had already been considered at the beginning of his treatment.
"He has fibrosis in the esophagus, as a side effect of radiotherapy, and now we are going to put a stent in and will see how it evolves," explained the doctor.
The decision to perform the procedure was made after a considerable increase in the narrowing of the former president's esophagus was detected.
The placement of the stent will facilitate the intake of food and liquids, especially considering that he had previously undergone surgery for the placement of a feeding tube.
In previous months, Mujica had publicly informed about his diagnosis of a malignant tumor in the esophagus, a situation that is complicated due to his immunological disease, which has hindered chemotherapy treatments.
The operation will be performed under general anesthesia, and Mujica is expected to remain hospitalized for several days after the procedure.
