Managua, January 16 (RHC)-- The Telica Volcano in Nicaragua has recorded 91 eruptions of gases, water vapor and ash, which puts its surroundings on alert because this represents an active state of the volcano.

According to the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (Ineter), during the night, four small explosions of gases and ashes occurred between 10:14 p.m. and 11:55 p.m. (local time).  These explosions launched fragments of rocks that reached a distance of up to 50 meters on the slopes of the volcano.

The most recent activity was recorded at 09:42 (local time), and according to Ineter, volcanic activity is expected to continue in the coming hours or days, with the possibility of higher-altitude exhalations.

The ashes could affect nearby communities, which has generated concern among local authorities.

In response to the situation, the Nicaraguan Army Civil Defense, the National Disaster Prevention System (Sinapred) and Ineter specialists will carry out a drone overflight to better assess the scope of volcanic activity and its possible repercussions.

Authorities have recommended that the population remain calm and take precautionary measures, while advising to cover containers with water and food, have flashlights available and wet cloths in case of needing to protect the respiratory tract.

In addition, the community and tourists have been urged to avoid approaching or climbing the volcano due to the danger posed by exhalations accompanied by rocks.

Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure the safety of the inhabitants of the region.
