Brasilia, January 16 (RHC)-- The Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil is in the preparatory phase for the trial of the instigators and mentors of the coup attempt that took place on January 8, 2023, when radical followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro invaded and looted the headquarters of the National Congress, the STF and the Planalto Palace, in an act of discontent over the electoral results of the previous year.
Since that day, which has been marked as a dark moment in national history, 898 criminal charges have been filed. Until now, the STF's focus has been on the direct executors of these anti-democratic acts, but it is expected that from 2025 onwards attention will be directed towards the instigators and guides behind these events.
Similarly, the STF opened 15 investigations to determine the responsibilities not only of the executors, but also of those who encouraged and financed the plot.
Ministers consulted by the publication indicate that the investigations carried out by the Federal Police (PF) are close to completion, which will allow the Attorney General's Office (PGR) to file complaints against the masterminds.
Among the accused are Bolsonaro, members of his government (2019-2022) and businessmen. The trial will be conducted by a court composed of prominent ministers such as Cristiano Zanin, Carmen Lucia, Luiz Fux, Alexandre de Moraes and Flávio Dino.
In November 2024, after a bomb attack outside the STF, the president of the court, Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, stated that the investigations were moving towards a conclusion.
"It is a good time to conclude this complex investigation," said Barroso. The PGR must decide in February whether to file charges against the accused or request further proceedings or close the case.
Minister Barroso also stressed that Brazilian democracy has matured after being attacked by constant campaigns to discredit institutions and false accusations of electoral fraud. He stressed that the judicial system has been fundamental in showing that democracy resisted the populist and authoritarian advance.
Two years after the coup attempt on January 8, the STF has declared 898 people criminally responsible; Among them, 371 have received prison sentences and 527 have been subjected to alternative punishments. This judicial process is crucial to reaffirming the commitment to democracy in Brazil and ensuring that those who tried to undermine it face the corresponding legal consequences.
