In an official statement read by the Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luis Gilberto Murillo, it was indicated that "we have overcome the impasse with the United States Government."
Foreign Minister Murillo reported that in the next few days he will travel with other officials to Washington to hold high-level meetings to follow up on the agreements resulting from the joint work that led to the exchange of diplomatic notes between the two governments.
"We will continue to receive Colombians who return as deportees, guaranteeing them decent conditions as citizens subject to rights," said the official text of the government of the South American nation.
Colombia, under the directive of President Gustavo Petro, has the presidential plane ready to facilitate the return of the compatriots who were to arrive in the country today in the morning on deportation flights, he added.
Colombia ratifies that diplomatic channels of dialogue will be maintained to guarantee the rights, national interest and dignity of our citizens, the statement concluded.
This Sunday, Petro disavowed the landing of two U.S. military planes with deported Colombians, by refusing to return them in military aircraft and handcuffed.
In retaliation, Trump revealed that he would apply several unilateral coercive measures to the South American nation, including 25 percent tariffs on all Colombian products it imports. In response, Petro announced that he would impose 50 percent tariffs on U.S. products entering the Colombian market.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a statement on her social media account X, in which she highlighted that “the Government of Colombia has accepted all of President Trump’s terms.”
In her text, the official stressed that “the Government of Colombia has accepted all of President Trump’s terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal immigrants from Colombia returned from the United States, including on U.S. military aircraft, without limitation or delay.”
“Based on this agreement, the fully drafted tariffs and sanctions under the IEEPA will be kept in reserve and will not be signed unless Colombia fails to comply with this agreement,” he added.
He noted that visa sanctions issued by the State Department and enhanced Customs and Border Protection inspections will remain in effect until the first plane carrying Colombian deportees is successfully returned.”
“Today’s events make clear to the world that the United States is once again respected. President Trump will continue to fiercely protect our nation’s sovereignty, and he expects all other nations around the world to fully cooperate in accepting the deportation of their citizens who are in the United States illegally,” the statement concluded.
