Washington, February 10 (RHC)-- Elon Musk supports the closure of Radio Free Europe and Voice of America in the face of financial scrutiny by the Agency for International Development (USAID), a situation that he positions as a scandal at the national level, since it threatens taxpayers' money.

Faced with increasing financial scrutiny on the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), expressed this Sunday his support for the possible closure of the media Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Voice of America.

Musk argued that one of the reasons for cutting out these outlets is that “Europe is free now” and that “left-wing affiliates are talking to themselves while burning $1 billion a year of American taxpayer money,” he posted on his X account.

This debate comes after the revelation that USAID sponsored media outlets, including Politico, which sparked accusations that “taxpayer money was used by the agency to subsidize media subscriptions,” a fact that former President Donald Trump called “the biggest scandal ever, perhaps the biggest in history!”

Recent investigations have revealed USAID funding for a total of 6,200 journalists and support for at least nine out of ten Ukrainian media outlets.  In addition, it has been documented that the US federal agency's programs have supported independent media in at least 30 countries.

Musk also suggested that another reason for shutting down Radio Free Europe and Voice of America is the presence of a worrying number of left-wing activists on both outlets, arguing that there is no need for “government-funded” outlets.
